Experimental Exploration of Porcelain: Supporting the Advancement of Young
Designers, Ceramists and Visual Artists

Tasting Tomorrow, the 7th International Porcelain Workshop KAHLA-kreativ, aims to be a platform for the experimental work with porcelain in the context of exploring food against the backdrop of the Bauhaus anniversary in 2019. The workshop, organised by the Günther Raithel Foundation – Education Initiative KAHLA kreativ now for the 7th time, targets young designers, ceramists and visual artists with diverse cultural backgrounds. Twelve participants, who will be selected by an independent jury, will have the opportunity to spend four weeks at the production facilities at KAHLA/Thüringen Porzellan GmbH in the summer of 2018 to freely explore the creative potential of porcelain as material. An application form and detailed information about the workshop can be found on the website

Porcelain and food have an almost symbiotic relationship: the former serves as a vessel or stage for the latter which in turn is its content or inspiration. They also share similarities in textures, development process, processing methods and in their transformation through heat or fire. One year before the Bauhaus celebrates its 100th anniversary, the aim is to develop new connections to the pioneering contributions to the field by this institution. Participants are encouraged to explore new ways of connecting cooking and eating, work and life, and to develop the objects required –just like it was done at this institution in the past.

The workshop participants will have the opportunity to critically examine the creative and artistic potential of porcelain as a material in the context of food. Porcelain, food and a wide range of work techniques from manual over industrial to digital techniques will be explored in a collaboration that crosses disciplines.

From June 11th to July 6th, 2018, this creative process shall produce design-oriented as well as artistically free works of art. Working in close proximity to the production of porcelain at the facilities at KAHLA/Thüringen Porzellan GmbH will inspire the creative process. The participants will look for answers to the questions of what the taste and food of the future will be and what role food will play as a social activity, and they will explore the design of the objects as well as the required tools and materials.

At the end of this year, an independent expert jury will select the 12 workshop participants based on the applications received. The members of the jury are:
Dr. Sibylle Hoiman, curator, Bauhaus Archive / Museum of Design, Berlin
Nathalie Lautenbacher, Aalto University School of Arts, Design and Architecture, Helsinki
Wiebke Lang, editor-in-chief, designreport, Frankfurt / Main
Wilhelm Siemen, director, Porzellanikon State Museum of Porcelain, Selb
Andrin Willi, editor-in-chief, food magazine marmite, Zurich.

Founded in 2010, the Günther Raithel Foundation is dedicated to the advancement of education, culture, science and research related to porcelain and similar materials. The work of the non-profit foundation focuses on the development of young talent. The foundation for example supports the renowned "KAHLA kreativ" project for young ceramists, designers, artists and students. "We are very excited about the applications we will be receiving in the coming weeks, and we are looking forward to the summer of 2018 when KAHLA once again becomes a research laboratory for exploring the potential of the fascinating material porcelain", says Günther Raithel.

Partners of the 7th International Porcelain Workshop KAHLA kreativ include the Porzellanikon in Selb, the Art Foundation Sachsen-Anhalt and the Thüringer Tourismus GmbH.
